Bio
Shauna L Hart
I am a wildlife and conservation photographer based in northern Utah in the United States. Working professionally both under my name and as byhartphotography, I use my camera as both an artistic tool and a means of advocacy; a way to give voice to wildlife and the landscapes that sustain it.
My path into conservation photography began with a profound connection to the American West. Surrounded by mountains, migration corridors, and the Great Salt Lake, I have focused on wildlife we find here, elk, moose, and all kinds of migratory birds. But as I spent more time in these wild places, I began to see the pressures they face, expanding development, fragmented habitat, and the increasing reality of wildlife-vehicle collisions. What began as creative exploration became something far more personal: a responsibility to tell stories that matter.
I am drawn to quiet, revealing moments — an animal pausing at the edge of a road, moving cautiously through deep snow, or crossing a shrinking corridor of habitat. These are not dramatic spectacles, but honest reflections of survival in our human dominated world. Through my work, I hope to foster empathy and invite viewers, wherever they live, to consider their own relationship with wildlife and wild places.
My conservation-focused photography has received international recognition, including the 2024 Sony Alpha Female Grant and, that same year, a Top 31 Judges’ Choice award in conservation from the North American Nature Photography Association. I value these honors not simply as milestones, but as confirmation that conservation storytelling can resonate across borders and cultures.
Conservation is woven into my daily life. I serve as Chairman of the Utah Wildlife Federation and Director of Lessons Through The Lens; Kids For Conservation. I work alongside dedicated advocates to protect habitat, advance wildlife crossing infrastructure, and promote ethical wildlife viewing. For me, leadership is a natural extension of the work I do behind the lens — the same commitment that shapes my advocacy shapes every photograph I create.
At its heart, my photography is about responsibility to the land, to wildlife, and to future generations. Each image is an invitation to slow down, to witness, and to recognize that the future of wild places depends on what we choose to protect. Through my work, I strive to create photographs that are not only visually compelling, but that quietly encourage stewardship of the natural world we all share.
